Pit Treatment Project

The client needed to empty a partially refilled pit in order to satisfy commitments of the mine plan. Pit water had been affected by storm water overflow from an adjacent copper heap leach facility, and, as such, the pit water chemistry was a concentrated solution. Total volume was approximately 150 million gallons. The treatment system design included: pumping from the pit to the top of a heap, implementation of a two stage lime neutralization system to remove metals (including magnesium), softening by cold lime soda ash, and membrane separation using reverse osmosis. Treated water was discharged under a NPDES permit and the concentrate was recycled to the heap solution management system.
